Hello & Welcome to
The Colorado Abandoned Newsletter!
A little about what we do.
Whenever we are out taking pictures for Colorado Abandoned we always respect the places we visit. No tagging, no vandalism, no senseless destruction, and absolutely no theft. We keep in mind that other people may visit these same places we go after we do, and leave them so they can experience these places just as we did. We always try to leave the places untouched as much as possible and operate by the motto: "take only pictures, leave only footprints..."
Our captured images express our passion for life and the art we create while trying to preserve history for future generations through the camera lens. It is our desire to uncover a slice of humanity by displaying the relics, memories and stories left behind as society evolves and moves on.
It is our calling to try and find the beauty in the abandoned and to try and make the ordinary, extraordinary. We don't always succeed but it is a mission in progress.
Thank you for joining us on this adventure.
“You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep Spring from coming.”
~ Pablo Neruda
“In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt.”
~ Margaret Atwood
“Is the spring coming?" he said. "What is it like?"...
"It is the sun shining on the rain and the rain falling on the sunshine...”
~ Frances Hodgson Burnett
“It is spring again. The earth is like a child that knows poems by heart.”
~ Rainer Maria Rilke
In these two pictures, the pair of old trucks remind me of a couple of old maids, where the twin resemblance is still very much intact even after the passage of many years. Even through the years, their individual purposes, personalities, and lifestyles may have changed, time has not destroyed their twin identity and the bond they will share forever.
Sometimes you just stumble upon some good stuff when you least expect it, and that is exactly what happened to me recently. While out roaming around in Baca County, CO a while back, I took a chance and headed up a dirt road heading in a northerly direction. Not far off of the highway, I came upon this crazy shaped lot filled with old vehicles, buildings (several that were moved in and never taken off of their transport trailers), and a whole host of other interesting goodies (exactly the kind of stuff we look for).
Seeing as how I was dealing with a small window of opportunity, I stopped, got out and did a little walk about and captured what I could with what I had. I didn't have my regular camera (a Canon 60D) with me at the time, so as the old saying goes, the best camera to use is the one you have with you. This time, I just had my trusty cell phone. After getting a few pictures of what I could in the time frame allowed, I figured I had better make some mental notes of the location and layout of the place for a definite return trip. I will return with my partner in grime with better equipment and more time to better capture the scene in better detail. Yes, will be back.
Taking it on the Road!
We recently attended the 3rd Annual Spring Fling Craft Fair at the Plainview School Gymnasium in Sheridan Lake, CO and had a great time meeting and visiting with a bunch of nice folks there. This was our first time out doing a craft fair and setting up a booth. We learned it takes longer to setup and take down than we thought it would and the less trips you can make back and forth bringing in and taking out your wares, the better.
The organizers of this event were wonderful hosts and were there to help wherever needed and everything was ready for us when we arrived. They had breakfast burritos available in the morning and sloppy joes for lunch. Thank you Amanda Koeller and crew for taking such good care of us! Hopefully we will be able return again to this event in the future.
Whenever we are not out at a craft fair or outdoor market, we have some of our items available at the Vendor's Gallery in Lamar, CO located at 104 West Olive. This includes some small canvas pieces, individual and matted prints and a nice selection of tile coasters. Stop in and see all the goodies that Virginia has in her venue. She has an excellent selection of fine antiques, handmade goods, and much more. Worth your visit if you are in Lamar or passing through.
Trinidad Photography Gallery Show
We are excited to announce that we have been asked to be the featured photographers for a galley exhibition at the new Trinidad Photography Gallery in downtown Trinidad, CO. The opening reception will be June 8th from 6 to 8pm following with a photography signing brunch on June 9th from 11am to 1pm. Our photography will be on display at the gallery until the end of June. More info coming soon!
Schedule a Show
We are always looking to schedule more shows and events for the future. At any one time we have between 25 to 35 gallery quality canvas prints in various sizes available for art installations, banquets, Pop-Ups, corporate events, etc., that we may be able to make arrangements to setup and display at your location.

What's Lex Up To?
Lex, his girls, and his brother recently took a trip over to the western slope to lay down some tracks for a couple of new CDs he is working on. He will be doing some mixing and arranging on the new music for a while but it won't be long before he has them ready and ready to share. When he gets the music done, he plans to book some shows this summer. We will try to get the shows added to our event page when he gets some lined out.
FYI - Lex and crew will be playing at the annual Cruising into Summer event in downtown Rocky Ford starting at 1pm on June 2nd. The event organizers block off Main Street for 3 or 4 blocks south of the railroad tracks and have street vendors, craft booths, live entertainment, a car show and much more happening that day. Need something to do on that day, well, this should fit the bill.
Be sure to stop by Lex's website at lexnichols.com to check out his music and what he is up to.
Who knows at this point? Vincent is making some life changes and weighing his options (as many of us are). He is trying to get out and take more photographs, working with the traveling art booth we recently got rolling, and most importantly, trying to stay out of trouble. Wish him luck!
Vincent is in the process of putting some of his favorite personal photography online on the Fine Art of America art hosting site. This site allows the artist (photographer) the opportunity to upload their images and make them available to a larger audience of individuals, collectors, and the art community. The images can be purchased as canvas prints, prints, handbags, sheets, shower curtains and several other fun items. Stop by his profile page HERE and see what he has up there so far.
