Thoughts on Winter

"In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer."
~Albert Camus

"I have come to regard November as the older, harder man's October. I appreciate the early darkness and cooler temperatures. It puts my mind in a different place than October. It is a month for a quieter, slightly more subdued celebration of summer's death as winter tightens its grip."
~Henry Rollins

"People don't notice whether it's winter or summer when they're happy.
~Anton Chekhov

"Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face."
~Victor Hugo

The Next Big Contest

Win this Original 11x14 Color Print!

Back Story - We were out on one of our whirlwind shooting adventures in east central Colorado on a cool November day and came across what appeared to be a little ghost town (for lack of a better description). This place was exactly what we travel around looking for, and we found a gold mine of photographic goodies at this location. There were several different types of buildings here, and one of them was an openly exposed garage/workshop that had an amazing amount of miscellaneous items scattered everywhere.

There was stuff on all the walls, all over the floor, and even hanging from the ceiling. It seems nothing was ever wasted or for that matter, thrown away. There were so many different types of cans, jugs, bottles, plastic containers (with who knows what in them), car parts, wire, rods, and the list goes on and on. Take a closer look around in the picture and you will get an idea. This was just one corner of this place. It was Amazing!

In the short amount of time we had, we took our chances and captured as much as we could. As it turned out, this was one of the best locations we had ever come across in our abandoned travels. The term 'happy as a kid in a candy store' doesn't quite capture our excitement. We know, we only just scratched the surface recording and documenting this particular location. Hopefully we will get an opportunity to revisit this place again in the near future.

Now, to enter our FREE Giveaway Contest!

Back in March, Lex released a new album titled, 'Songs of the Plains'. This album had been nominated for the 17th Annual Native American Music Awards. The awards are over and Lex is very honored to have been included in this prestigious event in the "Native Heart" category. Click Here to learn more about the 17th Annual NAMMY Awards. While on this page, you will be able to listen to some wonderful music.

Songs of the Plains combines Native American flute, acoustic guitar and the meditative sounds of nature that lead the listener on a journey through the Comanche Grasslands, vast prairies and the beautiful wetlands of the plains.

Lex has also been busy the past few months documenting and creating video projects for some of the premier produce growers in the Arkansas Valley in Colorado.

A crisp wintery day in southeast Colorado provides the backdrop and setting for this abandoned storefront out in the middle of nowhere. The low slung sun provides the rays and camera flare that accentuates the stillness and loneliness of this deserted, once thriving retail oasis. It now rests in desolation on a lonely highway in the vast expanse of the open prairie.

As you look in, you find you can see well beyond the confines of a once humble farm/ranch house. You can see a place, where it is imagined, a once happy, close-knit family of rural devotes passed the hours enjoying the warmth of the hearth, the wood cook stove, Illumination from a kerosene lantern, and the laughter around the kitchen table. Each individual family member sharing their everyday trials and jubilations, while quietly, in their own way, fulfilling the American Dream.
